What does motherhood mean to women, and what does it look like to honor that in all its real and raw beauty—its peaks and valleys? To find the answer we turned inward, tapping our own team of moms as muses and sharing an honest behind-the-scenes look at our Mother’s Day campaign with our community.

After weeks of meeting, scheming, and thoughtfully shaping every detail, we walked away from our photoshoot with so much more than beautiful snapshots of women and interviews about our products. We discovered something deeper that every mom needs to be reminded of this Mother’s Day. Read on for our conversations with five Artifact Uprising moms and the thread of strength we found connecting each of them.

On Power

Melissa, Chief Marketing Officer

“Motherhood is power. That is the word that defines every action a mother takes. It’s strength, it’s vulnerability, it’s sacrifice—and all of those things compound to a very powerful person.”

“I’ve learned that I really love who I am. Something I realized was that power and strength come from softness. Your kids don’t need you to look like you’re strong—what they need is for someone to be vulnerable and open and make them feel safe. I realized that has always been my superpower, and it made me really proud of who I am.”
“When I became a mom, I realized the importance of legacy. And when I look at these pictures, I see my legacy in action.” – Karen, Melissa’s mom

On Honor

Eliza, Senior Product Manager

“Motherhood is a gift. It’s really an honor to get to know deeply who these little people are and get to see who they are growing into. And I love being able to see the world again through a child’s eyes—to get excited to see a dump truck drive by or a construction site or see animals at the zoo for the first time.”

“I’ve been most surprised by how much your capacity for things grows—your capacity for challenge and your capacity for love and joy just grows.”

On Discovery

Marissa, Senior Software Engineer

“For me, when I think of my motherhood, the word discovery comes to mind. I think I’ve discovered a lot about myself, about what I’m capable of, about what I need, and then also just my role as a mother. But it’s also fun to discover her personality. It feels like I’m getting to know her more every day, which is really fun.”
“I learned I can function on a lot less sleep than I ever believed! But I also found a lot of joy in motherhood. I didn’t know it was possible to feel so much joy.” – Marissa

On Wisdom

Amy, Chief Financial Officer

“Wisdom is what motherhood means to me. It’s this beautiful generational pass-down of wisdom that I got from my mom, and that my mom got from her mom, that I get to give that to my kids as I raise them to be beautiful, kind people in the world. The thing that felt more surprising to me with motherhood is the wisdom I get from my kids. I didn’t think about that when I had kids, and the little things and the big things that they’ve taught me since they were born have been remarkable.”

“I’ve learned how strong I am and how strong my kids are. People would always tell me—and my Mom said—that motherhood is hard, but it’s the best thing you can do. Until I had kids, I didn’t realize just how true that was. And I think in the process of having kids and raising them, I’ve learned it is hard, and I can do hard things.”

On Hope

Morgan, Director of Brand Marketing

“Motherhood is hope. You look… ooh, I’m going to get teary. You look at these little guys and they’re filled with so much innocence and curiosity. It gives you so much joy and hope for the future.”

“Since becoming a mother, I’ve learned that I’m more flexible than I thought I was. You just kind of have to go with the flow as a parent and take what happens in stride, and I think that’s something that I wasn’t sure if I was going to have as a mom. Now I definitely feel like, OK, I can do this. Motherhood is filled with the highest highs and the lowest lows… but I’m proud of how we’re raising this little guy, and how we are figuring it out.”
This month and always, we hope you take time to reflect on your strength, your power, and your amazing journey of motherhood. Discover what it means to you, and hold that closely. From all of us here at Artifact Uprising, happy Mother’s Day—to you and those before you.
